EMM glossary term: Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

Search Engine Marketing. This is the process of getting a website to achieve top rankings for its chosen key phrases on SERPs. See SEO and Organic Search.

SEO is the abbreviation for search engine optimization or search engine optimizer. Search engine optimization is a method of using different strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) — including Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines. The ultimate goal in SEO is, for example in google, to have your search result seen on the first results page of say Google. So you want to be on the highest rank. What you think about when working in SEO is what people search the most, what they like to search, whether it is images or text pages, what keywords they often use, what videos are searched for etc. And then with the use of all of those information you can work your way up the searching scale.  The earlier and more frequently the search results appear, the more visitors your site will get, and therefore you will have more business opportunity. Search engine optimizer is another way of internet marketing, which requires a lot of work and searching. Another tactic of Search Engine Optimizer is to increase the number of inbound links. When SEO is used as plural, that is search engine optimizers, that is refered to people who provide SEO services.
